Situated between the Providence and Seekonk Rivers to the west and the Massachusetts area of Seekonk to the east, East Providence covers a total area of 16.6 square miles (43 km²), of which 13.4 square miles (35 km²) is land and 3.2 square miles (8.3 km²), or 19.33%, is water. The city includes the villages of East Providence Center, Riverside, and Rumford.
East Providence operates under a mayor-council system, with an elected mayor and a five-member city council serving four-year terms. The city council consists of one representative from each of the four wards and one at-large member.
East Providence has an elected school committee, with members serving two-year terms based on the same ward system as the city council. The committee oversees school policies, budgeting (within city and state allocations), and the selection of the Superintendent of Schools.
